Neti & Nasya: Health Benefits and Uses
Neti & Nasya: Sinus Rinse for Optimal Immunity
Neti and Nasya are powerful practices in Ayurveda to maintain sinus health and support immunity, especially during winter. Neti involves rinsing the nasal passages with warm saltwater to clear mucus and prevent infection. However, this can dry out the delicate mucous membranes, which is where Nasya comes in — applying medicated oil to the nostrils after Neti to restore moisture and protect the sinuses.
Anatomy of the Nasal Passages
The lining of the nasal passages is covered in tiny hair-like structures called cilia, which act as brooms to sweep out mucus, pollutants, and pathogens. If the cilia are blocked or overworked, mucus accumulates and pathogens can’t be cleared efficiently, leading to conditions like sinusitis, infections, and a weakened immune system.
Why Use Nasya Oil?
Neti clears out mucus but can dry the membranes. Nasya oil rehydrates the sinuses, promoting healthy bacteria that help prevent congestion and infection. The oils used in Nasya often include herbs like Gotu Kola and Calamus, which also support brain function and mental clarity. In Ayurveda, cleansing the sinuses is believed to help clear stored emotions in the brain as well.
What Makes a Good Nasya Oil?
Unmedicated sesame oil is an excellent alternative for Nasya if you don’t have a specialized oil. It’s nourishing for all body types. Be sure to use organic, unrefined sesame oil (avoid toasted sesame oil). Nasya oils can also be found at health food stores or online Ayurvedic stores.
Neti & Nasya Routine:
Neti: Mix ¼ tsp non-iodized salt with warm, purified water (similar to body pH). Pour the solution into one nostril, letting it flow out the other. Repeat on both sides, then gently blow your nose. Best done in the morning or at least 2 hours before bed.
Nasya: After Neti, warm the Nasya oil and drop 2-4 drops into each nostril. Tilt your head back, sniff deeply to pull the oil into your sinuses, and you may taste it in your throat. Repeat daily for 2 weeks or until congestion improves.
Conclusion:
Neti and Nasya are simple, effective practices for supporting sinus health and immunity. They also help improve clarity and mental focus, making them a great morning ritual. Let me know how your practice goes or if you have any questions!
